Open Burning
PERMITS ARE REQUIRED FOR ALL OPEN BURNING IN THE TOWN OF ORLEANS
Open Burning Season runs annually from January 15th to April 30th.
Open burning permits are only available online on the Town of Orleans website.
Cost per permit is $10.00; If writing a check, make checks payable to: Town of Orleans.
Burn days are evaluated each morning, between 9:15 – 9:30am, by the State Forest Fire Warden and the Local Fire Department respectively.
As spring approaches burn days become more hazardous, therefore more burn days are cancelled. If you have a significant amount of burning to accomplish this season, please start early.
Safe Burning Tips
- Fires must be 75ft away from any structure or vehicle.
- The person setting the fire must have sufficient help to control the fire and shall not leave the fire unattended.
- A water source to extinguish the fire must be readily available.
- Burning is not permitted when winds exceed 20 mph.
- If burning is being conducted and wind speeds increase, the fire shall be extinguished immediately.
