Student Safe Program
Teaching fire safety education in Schools
Student Awareness of Fire Education (SAFE) is a fire safety education program directed at our local school age population.
The Orleans Fire Department has been providing the SAFE program for over twenty years. This program is funded through the Massachusetts State Legislature budget annually.
The SAFE program is coordinated by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services under the direction of the state Fire Marshal’s Office.
Annually, local Fire Departments throughout Massachusetts apply for funding through a competitive grant process that begins around September. The program funding amounts are based on citizen population and student population within the individual towns throughout Massachusetts.
This funding allows us to provide public fire safety education lessons for school age children from pre-K to 8th grade. In addition, this funding allows us to purchase learning materials for our classroom visits, educational handouts for children during fire house visits and our annual open house coinciding with NFPA’s annual fire prevention week.
