Why is Carbon Monoxide a Problem?
What is Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, poison gas.
Carbon Monoxide is produced when fossil fuels (i.e. Wood, coal, oil, natural gas) burn incompletely.
Carbon Monoxide is an invisible enemy that can produce adverse health affects before it is even detected.
Carbon Monoxide Sources
Any machine or process that burns fuel can produce carbon monoxide. Almost all household appliances and machines may produce CO when operating.
Typical household sources of Carbon Monoxide include:
- Gas water heaters
- Fuel fired furnaces
- Fireplaces, Wood stoves, Charcoal Grills
- Lawnmowers, Generators, Automobiles
Carbon Monoxide Statistics
Approximately 1,500 people die of CO poisoning yearly.
Approximately 10,000 people require medical attention from CO poisoning yearly.
Carbon Monoxide Symptoms
Carbon Monoxide symptoms are similar to the flu (without the fever)
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Shortness of Breath
- Nausea
- Dizziness
How to Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Exposure to Carbon Monoxide poisoning can be reduced by following some general guidelines:
- Do not run vehicles or equipment in enclosed garages
- Inspect chimneys and vent pipes for blockage
- Have furnaces inspected & serviced yearly
- Install Carbon Monoxide detectors throughout your home
If you suspect a Carbon Monoxide buildup in your home evacuate the home and call 911
